New ads list participating pharmacies!

October 29, 2010

Hi Pharmacists!

I’ve just put forth a new ethics amendment that will allow us to distribute study ads at community health centres and public health units across BC! The new ads will include a list of LOCAL participating pharmacies. (Click here for example)

YOU WILL ONLY BE ADVERTISED AS A PARTICIPATING PHARMACY IF 1 OR MORE OF YOUR PHARMACISTS HAVE COMPLETED THE ONLINE TRAINING!

So, if you haven’t found time yet to complete the 2 hour training, you have until NOVEMBER 12 to get your pharmacy name included on the study ads for your area!

Why ALL pregnant/breastfeeding patients if we’re really just interested in hypertensive ones??

October 26, 2010

Hi Pharmacists!

I think a lot of pharmacists are concerned about the patient population so I just want to clarify:

We want to show that we can bring all pregnant/breastfeeding women into drug safety surveillance at the pharmacy level. If pharmacists are able to do this, we have a new way to monitor this sensitive population for any number of potential drug concerns in the future. The “drug concern” that we are using to illustrate the success of this patient identification and surveillance strategy is antihypertensive medications.  If we recruit all pregnant/breastfeeding patients indiscriminately, the 7-10% of hypertensive patients will surface naturally and we can perform our subset analyses on these patients.

Thanks again for all of your hard work!  We’ve doubled our patient intake this week!  Keep up the good work!!

Case Report Form Addendum

October 22, 2010

Hi Pharmacists!

The College has recently changed its rules regarding the printing of BC PharmaNet files for research applications.  As a result, we are no longer authorized to collect BC PharmaNet files from you directly.

We now ask you to fill out a case report form addendum for any ANTIHYPERTENSIVE medications the patient has taken in the last 14 months as shown on the BC PharmaNet file.  If a patient is not taking antihypertensive medications, you aren’t required to record any of the patient’s medication history.

Thank you for staying up to date with us!

You can access a copy by requesting a fax from Jamie (jamie513@interchange.ubc.ca; 604-806-9099) or by downloading and printing the CRF addendum here.

Let’s talk

October 20, 2010

Over 100 pharmacists across BC are working on the pregnancy and breastfeeding study and it’s time to open up our lines of communication!

Some pharmacists are still trying to get through the training and others have recruited up to 5 patients!  We are extending the recruitment period to the end of December so we have just over 2 months to get 1000 patients into drug surveillance through this study.  Let’s talk about how we can make it happen!

What has made your research successful so far?

What has gotten in your way?

How can researchers make studies easier to implement for community pharmacists?

You can leave your comments on this site or send an email to jamie513@interchange.ubc.ca

Pregnancy/Lactation and Hypertension (PLH) Online Training Available Soon

July 29, 2010

The online training materials for our Pregnancy/Lactation and Hypertension (PLH) study are almost ready! They should be available next week. We will be posting a link to the training on this site as well as sending out an email to all participating pharmacies detailing how to access the training. The materials will include various modules, each with a video clip, and a quiz that will need to be completed in order to receive your accreditation certificate. The training should take about 90 minutes to complete. We will also be sending out training binders to all participating pharmacies to provide more detailed study information and sample forms.

If you have any questions about the training or study participation in general, please feel free to send us an email (jamie513@interchange.ubc.ca). We appreciate your participation and look forward to launching the study once training has been completed!

These materials will be CPPD-accredited and are designed to provide information about the topic of each study as well as information regarding study-specific procedures.

Please email us if you have any questions (jamie513@interchange.ubc.ca).
